- I was out of the game for most of 2009. I spent a good portion of the year either out of work or billing substantially less than 40 hours a week. As you can imagine, I didn't spend a lot on cards during the year. I've been looking for a cheap way to complete the Topps Series 1, 2 and Update sets. Here's my question: why do all the major retailers still have so few boxes of 2009 Topps base products? Was there some story that caused the product to fly off the shelf that I either missed or forgot?
- Can anyone recommend a good vendor, an eBay seller is fine, where I can find numerous 1971 - 1973 Topps high number cards .. for prices that border on cheap? I'm not really concerned about condition .. in fact .. I would prefer the cards be in the Good - VG range rather than Ex Mt. Is this a pipe dream?
- What do most of you do with the myriad meaningless autographs you pull out of products like Bowman? I'm not talking about the major league prospects or even the guys who become AAAA players bouncing up and down from MLB to AAA, but rather the guys who never make it out of single A ball for a team you don't even remotely care about?
- Is there any shame in throwing cards you don't want into the garbage? Is there any other way for me to get rid of a stack of 1981 Topps Bob Owchinko cards?

3. I don't buy Bowman for just that resason. But I do try to pick the Red Sox autos that are numbered as part of the base set even if they never make it out of Single A. So if you have any of them let me know.
4. Cards are never garbage. Do a search for donating cards. There is a sight out there but i don't remember what it is.

1. due to the crappy economy, card manufacturers cut production back severely in late 2008/early 2009. as the economy improved, the presses started rolling. this is why a hobby box of Series 1 is over 90 bucks, while Series 2 and Update are less than 45 each at DA.

if you want to rip boxes, you can get a box of each for under $200 at that link. If you just want the set, you can get a factory set and a box of updates for half that.

3. Prospect autographs are only meaningless in hindsight. I found a prospect autograph tucked away with an old Topps Traded set recently - of some catcher named Victor Martinez. My suggestion: either a) hold and see what happens to the players in 5-7 years or b) trade them off to a team/player collector who will appreciate them.
4. if you have a stack of 1981 Bob Owichenko cards that is perfect Bipping ammunition right there. I will admit to occasionally chucking a pile of junk wax Donruss on occasion however so use your own judgement.
